Testimonial of Tillie Harris. Freelance copywriter, London.

photo“I trained as a journalist but after a short time I realised that working in an open plan office isn’t for me – I work much more effectively on my own. About six years ago I went freelance – I write for charities and government, mostly information and advice for children and families. I work from home, though occasionally I pop into client’s offices for meetings. This works really well for me, I can organise my time to suit myself. A couple of years ago I went to Spain for a few months and emailed all my work from there – my clients didn’t even know I’d gone!

One of the things I really appreciate about working from home is that I am able to prioritise my family and friends when I need to. For example, I go to my mum’s hospital appointments with her, and if I need to catch up with my work in the evening or at the weekend it’s not a problem.

Now I have a little girl, and although I have had to reduce the amount I do, I’ve been able to fit some work around her. I can do the odd hour while she’s napping, but mostly I wait until my husband is looking after her. You can get a lot done in a relatively short periods if you don’t have any interruptions!

It wouldn’t suit everyone – you miss out on colleagues and gossip, and you have to be pretty self motivated, but it really works for me and my family.”

Testimonial of Laura Morris from www.rentabuggy.co.uk

andrea“I run two businesses from home and am a single mum to my daughter, who is 3 years old. I run my own business called Rentabuggy.co.uk, where we lease out pushchairs and also co-own another company.

Working from home is ideal for me as it means I can take my daughter to school and be there for all her important events. It does mean I may have to sacrifice some of my evenings to work but I don’t mind this as I it means I can have a good work/family balance.”
